printer problem

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2012-08-27 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't assume anyone here has a Canon iP2500? I'm trying to help my dad print a photo from his computer, and the damn thing will just not work. It prints text okay, but not pictures! Relevant to this might be the fact that I'm forced to use Paint, since he has no decent programs installed. Should I try to install Photoshop or something, and hope that fixes the problem?

(And yeah, I have checked printer settings and so forth. I can't see any reason why the damn thing isn't able to deal with pics.)

Have you tried printing a pic via Word? That would clear up if the problem's with Paint or the printer.

Or could the colour cartride be faulty/blocked, and it can print text because that only relies on the black cartridge?

He doesn't have Word installed either -_- But I did try to print it using WordPad! Didn't work, though.

The color cartridges on the printer are all out, actually -- but he wants to print the photo in black and white, so I figured that was irrelevant. Perhaps I'm wrong though? I almost never print stuff myself, so I dunno.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a suspicion that it'll try to mix greys from the colour cartridge/s unless you specify B&W printing, but I'm not certain whether that's an option in Paint (I thought it was but I can't find it on my version).

Hope you figure it out though, good luck!

I have no idea if it's an option in Paint, but I did specify to print in black and white in the actual printer settings.

Still, I think you might be on to something! I'll try to make the picture b&w (hopefully Paint can do that), and see if that fixes the problem! Thanks for all your help :)

Have you tried opening it in a browser (IE, Firefox etc.) and printing through that, or is Paint really your only option? Installing Photoshop could help, but try with something simpler first.

Yup, I tried using IE! Exact same problem. What's super-strange is that the paper goes down, and the printer acts like it's actually printing (goes back and forth and makes noise, etc.) -- but when the paper comes out it's just blank.

Could be the color cartridges then, some printers are rather picky about them. Something about how the text is black-and-white, so it prints, but the picture has color information, so the printer tries to use colors, unless the user overrides this somehow (can't remember how to do that or if it's possible with your printer, sorry).

I did go into the printer settings and tell it to not use colors and only do black and white, but the picture is still in color... So yeah, I think you're right, that could very well be the problem! I'll try to make the pic black and white (hopefully Paint can do that), and see if that works. Thanks so much for helping out :)

da

it's been a while, but I remember there being some sort of "advanced" option for B&W printing that you can switch on and off that asks you if you want to use the color cartridge to supplement your B&W printing. you might have that one on

Ooo, I'll definitely look into that! It'd be awesome if the solution was something easy like that.

sa that just replied

i forgot to mention: if you choose to use only the black ink cartridge, it will drain quickly, even at the lowest quality of printing setting.

Ah, really? I'll be sure to mention that to him -- I know that he almost never uses his printer, but still. Thanks!
