Random Sleep Issue

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-08-27 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have this thing where I go to sleep and sometimes I'll jump pretty much right into a dream and usually it's someone yelling at me or some other stressful event and I can't do anything about it or move or even yell back because I am physically unable to move or communicate and vaguely I am aware that I am sleeping and then I wake up terrified and can't get back to sleep for like an hour. Is this sleep paralysis? If so, is there anything I can do to, uh, make it go away?

I have a friend who regularly experiences these! From what he told me, only rest and less stress can make them go away. But he hasn't seen a doctor about it, so maybe there's something else!

All I know is usually stressful dreams means you are having too much stress in reality. But I have NO CLUE how to fix it because it's a constant problem for me and even if I try my hardest to be relaxed during my waking hours my subconscious will tell me how I really feel when I'm trying to sleep.

I'm not very informed on sleep paralysis so...idk about that, but I'm willing to bet the other anon's are right about it having to do with stress. Stress can screw you up BIG TIME, in all areas.

A year or so ago I was having chest pains, pain in both arms, trouble sleeping, waking up with clenched fists, etc etc. My doctor ran some tests then sent me to get my heart checked, and I was fine; he put me on anxiety meds and the symptoms went away. So if this keeps happening and you're able, I say see a doctor about it just in case, because loss of sleep or troublesome sleep is again, seriously fucking awful, and stress can lead to worse, too.

:/ I am already on anxiety meds. Seems to be like just having a regular sleep schedule is the answer here.

i'm not sure because i've only had one experience with sleep paralysis, but usually if you hop right into REM sleep it means your body is used to not sleeping as many hours as it should. so yeah, what people are saying about getting more regular rest might help.

Not quite. With sleep paralysis, your eyes are actually open, so what you see around you is your own room. However, your brain and body are prepped for sleep, so you can't move, you can't speak without difficulty, and it's possible for you to have waking dreams. Typically, people who experience this think they see someone or something in the room with them, and since the "paralysis" can make it feel as if it's difficult to breathe, the entity has a tendency to walk over and push down or sit on the person's chest.

In case you haven't guessed, I've experienced this a few times. It's quite frightening, because since your eyes are open and you're at least partially awake, you don't have any awareness that it's not real.

I've also experienced what you're describing. I'll reiterate what others have said: getting on a regular sleep schedule helps, as does reducing stress. It might sound silly, but have you ever tried meditating at all? If I'm feeling anxious or stressed, I find that meditating before going to bed helps me to both fall asleep more quickly and to avoid bad or physically disturbing dreams.

I'm only going by what I found on wikipedia, but my guess is you are experiencing sleep paralysis. The prevention part of the article suggests what can cause it and gives a some prevention tips too.

I've experienced it a few times myself and it's kinda freaky when it happens. I'm a bit scared it'll happen to me again, so I better stick to a better sleep schedule myself because my current one is horrible as it is. No more sneaking off to check comments on F!S in the middle of the night for me! XD

Good luck on getting through this, biohazardgirl!
