Sparkly quetzals and brightly coloured spiders!

[personal profile] joltymcjolterson 2012-08-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Meant to post this yesterday but I'm afraid I accidentally saved over it, so it was kittens and puppies and cute birds instead- which I know is not exactly a bad thing, but still! I'm sorry about that. In any case, here's the post, or as much as I remember of it. Today's feature are quetzals, birds that live in tropical America. Their name basically refers to the long, very impressive tail feathers that the male birds spot, and if it sounds familiar to you, then you're probably thinking of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent. As odd as it may seem, these birds are actually surprisingly difficult to spot in their normal habitat despite- or perhaps because- of the iridescent green feathers they have. While in any other setting they would stand out, in the jungle, such displays blend in very well.

And the spider of the day-

Meet Chrysilla lauta!

source

C. lauta is more commonly known as the elegant golden jumping spider, and I think you can see why. The three pictures here are, like most of the pictures of the quetzals, all of male spiders, which is where the species got their name from. They're definitely very beautiful animals. They can be found in rainforests, and are spread all over Southeast Asia and a good way into China.

Those spiders and birds make me jealous of being a human with dull, pale beige skin. Why can't we being more technocolored as a species?

Yaaaaay you actually posted my recommendation! They're gorgeous and I'd never seen pictures of blue ones. I didn't know they existed!

BIRDS WOOO. I love me some birds! And don't worry about yesterday, it was a very enjoyable post nonetheless. <3

That spider is even more colorful than the quetzals!

Quetzal trivia which I'm not sure is true because it's not like school has never lied to me, but it sounds like it probably is true:

Supposedly, Quetzals lose their colors and become depressed and eventually die if you try to keep them captive. :(

(Also, is that spider poisonous? D: I mean it's pretty c: but D:)
