Good beginner motorcycles?

Hello everyone! I'm finally getting on track to get my own motorcycle (taking the courses, getting insurance, getting my parents to realize YES THIS IS SOMETHING I REALLY WANT, etc.), and I was wondering if anyone on F!S knows any good motorcycles for beginners. I'm looking for something I can travel about 40 miles on, on highways, so I can travel between my college town and my hometown on weekends.

If it helps, I'm female, and about 5'4". :)

I expended this thread thinking "Oo, 5'4"? This could be useful to me in the future!" and then was disappointed. Sorry loracarol, I don't really know either. :( My guess is something small, obviously. You'll probably want saddlebags, but those big touring bikes that my dad seems to like now just look unwieldy. I'm sure your instructor for your courses will have some good suggestions! Mine is just "Not a Harley" because that's how I was raised, haha.

It's cool. :) A "Honda Rebel" was a suggestion I've heard, but as that's only one kind of bike, I feel like that's limiting- especially since I have to get my bike second-hand. |D (FTR, I asked someone shorter than my what bike they were riding, and that's where I got Honda Rebel, if that helps.) ^_^

Ooh, good point, asking the instructor. If you like, I could try and post the names of the bikes they suggest in the GC section of F!S?

Oh, no, no Harley's for me. They're too big and unwieldy, and the only people my family knows who ride them are all assholes, which makes me sad, because I'm sure there are non-asshole Harley riders out there... We've just never met any.

Ooo, the Honda Rebel is a cute little bike. Does seem too new to be cheap though, but I tend to think that of anything from 2000 and above which is MUCH less true than I assume it is.

Anyway, you can post if you'd like, but whenever I get around to it (I need to learn to drive a standard first... whenever I have time. Ugh.) I figure I'll just let my dad choose. He has a special talent for finding these things for cheap. I'm lucky; he's a mechanic, a biker AND a magic deal-finding machine.

Hah, I can totally relate to the Harley thing. I'm sure there are plenty of good Harley owners out there, but I haven't met any yet.

Also this reminds me of how awesome it is when bikers (or Jeep owners) pass each other and wave. I've considered doing that to other Neon owners but I don't think that counts.

Well, I'm finding some one craigslist that are $2000 and below, and we have a neighbor who's good with bikes, so maybe I'll get lucky. :D
