My ~~babble~~ ~~interrogation~~ questions yesterday about when people read F!S had some replies mentioning that they tend not to comment late because it feels awkward. So now I am wondering: how long ago does something have to be posted before you feel strange commenting on it? F!S posts, friends' journals, fanfiction, that sort of thing.

I usually don't comment past the 12 hour mark unless it's something relatively important for F!S or friends' journals. For fanfiction, I try to leave a comment on stuff I really liked regardless of when it was posted, because nothing makes my day quite like knowing someone out there is still reading and enjoying something I made.

On dA I get often comments on pics I posted two years ago, or even better, occasionally replies to comments I posted two years ago. That feels strange. I'd say less than a week is fine by me for journals and such, no limit if it's a comment on fic or art.

I really hate comments on deviantart for artwork that is really old, especially if it is something they don't like about the piece and/or something that should have been fixed because when something is old I already know what's wrong with it. Fixing old artwork is not as simple as a small edit to a piece you did the week prior, if the composition is bad, the drawing is bad, and the painting is bad then I can only take small fractions of the original idea and I will really just be doing a whole new piece.

I also really don't like it when people ask me questions on how I did it when something is years old (because I probably don't remember.) Or really questions or random comments period, like once I got a comment asking why a certain character wasn't included and I just had to respond with, "Because that character didn't exist when I drew this, the drawing is old look at the upload date."

I only keep old pieces up for other people's enjoyment because they tend to get mad at me when I go on deleting sprees and some I am okay with being up despite that I don't draw or paint that way anymore. I just wish people would look at the upload date before commenting.

I agree with the "looking at the upload date". Especially if it's really not even about the picture, but people asking where to find a video on some episode that came out years ago. I don't know, use google or youtube or something. Or better yet, these things are already mentioned in the artists comments or comments below, but they couldn't be bothered to read them.

Why not just not respond when someone asks you a stupid question on an old piece?

Learning not to respond is one of the great lessons of interacting with people on the Internet.

I usually don't respond, but occasionally like in the instance above where a character didn't exist I will respond because at least I have an answer.

But not responding doesn't stop those questions from coming to my inbox, and they annoy me regardless of if I respond or not.

Oh jeez, deviantart. I remember getting a comment on a photo taken at a con that went something like "OMFGz your so lucky!! Why didn't I born in the usa! >____________< But someday I will be there! Mwahahahaha *does evil plots*" I stared at my inbox for a long time.

Is it sad that I consider that somewhat above average for a dA comment? I mean, some of the more recent ones I've had are along the lines of:

My OC *insert name here* finds that really hot *insert roleplaying with another OC*. (Ohhkay)
RAPE!!!!OMG11!!! (wut)
so do you see my drow peless dont cer aput my a nthr messeg... (...seriously, what)

72 hours for me in most cases on a community or a friend's journal entry. Unless it's on art or fic and then there is no limit imo.

I randomly get replies to comments on F!S a few days later sometimes. I don't mind, but I wonder just how bored someone has to be to look through 3 days of F!S comments at once.

And I agree with your policy. Even though I'm a huge lurker, if I love a fic I will always comment.

I just did that because I've been away from my laptop for a few days and I mostly wanted to check out anything interesting in GC, but I looked up a couple of eye-catching secrets' threads.

And to answer your question: yes, very bored ;)
