Nah, identifying the character doesn't have to mean you really feel like you are the character and are going through their experiences. Most of time it's a variation of "I see a lot of similarities between me and this character" or "I know how this character feels". I have very rarely seen someone describe identifying a character the way you described it, OP.

That said, sometimes not even the above happens. Enjoy the story any way you want. I rarely identify with characters, partially because character interaction is my favorite part of books and movies and such. I like to feel a bit for all the characters involved rather than feel a lot for/identify with just one or two of the characters involved.
