Oh, they did? Well, that's good to hear. Eager volunteers are easy enough to find, it's getting good ones who coordinate well that's the issue, along with keeping up with hardware and software expenses and malicious hacks as popularity grows. We've all seen what happens when sites that start off as cozy fan-favorites get past a certain point of no return (hi, LJ!)

Yes, coordination is probably the bottleneck. And there were rumblings about issues with how wise and democratic the web development decisions were, IIRC, so that might make it hard to keep good ones around? But now you've actually got me more nervous about other things besides capacity. Scalability, I guess?

The entire mess with LJ and similar exercises in making $$ off of fandom without wanting to deal with it is why I am so desperate for AO3 to work. My old school fandom instincts just freak out at the very mention of profit/marketing/advertising :)
