You need to not be so literal about it. If you can understand why a character does what they do and feel like you would do the same in that situation then that's another way of identifying with them. Think about Vampire Diaries and how Elena and Bonnie are always willing to die for each other. I feel as if I have someone in my life I'd do the same for. Therefore, I identify with them.
