Yesterday I was reading a novel and the main character's father died. She went to the funeral and it felt really surreal, because she couldn't believe he was really dead. I've been to a funeral of a good friend, and it felt surreal in a similar way: I couldn't process the fact that my friend was dead; even though logically I knew that all those people were there to mourn her, I couldn't seem to connect with her death and mourn it at all. It felt like I was just dreaming -- incredibly surreal. So I know a little bit about what that character was feeling. That's all "identification" means: it's the moment when you look at another person and you realize you've had a similar experience to the one they're having or describing to you. Big words make it seem more complex than that, but it's not.
