Nah, I don't really identify with anyone either. And when other people say they do, all I can think of is "but, but, you don't resemble that character at all... like in any way." But it's fun for them, so I keep my mouth shut.

That's...not really what it means. It doesn't necessarily mean you resemble the character. It means some aspect of that character resonates with you, whether you've been in a situation similar enough to one that the character has been in to be able to know exactly how that feels from your own memory, or you're dealing with an issue the character is dealing with, or something about the character's actions or thoughts reminds you of things you've thought or done. You don't have to be like the character at all.

For example, I would say I identify with JD from Scrubs because I'm constantly daydreaming and living in my own little fanciful world and going off on big mental tangents in response to events I experience and things people say. And I have had that experience where I followed a train of thought in reaction to a statement someone made, and made connections or came to conclusions or found solutions, and then started talking about that statement as though I had just explained my train out loud, only to have everyone stare at me like "wtf are you talking about?" and "where the fuck did that suddenly come from?" more times than I can count, for longer than I can remember.

I don't resemble JD in any way other than that, I don't share a single other character trait with him, my life is nothing like his, and I don't talk or behave in a JD-ish manner at all, but I understand that aspect of his character so strongly and so vividly on such a personal level that I'd still say I identify with him very strongly.

Or even further: I'd say I identify with Bruce Banner really really strongly, because the Hulk and the way he struggles with the Hulk is such an accurate metaphor for my legitimate anger issues and the way I deal with them and the way I feel about them that it's scary. Now, I don't resemble Bruce Banner much because my personality is nothing like his for the most part and I have actual anger issues that go out of control rather than having some sci-fi condition that parallels what anger issues are like, but I'd still say I identify with him because I understand what it feels like on a far more minor level.
