I don't think you're doing anything wrong, OP - there's no right or wrong way when it comes to fiction, everybody is different.

That said, I have found myself identifying to a few characters. I can like or feel sorry for lots of characters, but the ones I relate to are just a few and for various reasons (I've been in the same situation, the character acts the same way I do/would, etc.). I'm not inserting myself in the skin of the character - I don't imagine myself in the story, I don't imagine myself having a love story with another character that has a crush on the character I relate to - I simply have a "connection" with the character, but I still want to read their story and what happens to them and not project it on me. Heck, I want to be friends with the characters I can relate to, not be in their skin - I think that's the difference.
