I don't know, I guess I'd be afraid of being separated from my brothers too, since that's all I've ever heard about in fiction, on the news (children separated by foster families grow up identical!) etc. If they've read the same thing I have, I wouldn't be surprised.

That's true. But didn't August leave the orphanage? I thought he had run away from it, and that's why his story didn't have happy adoption- he ran away instead of being adopted. It might have been nice if that was the case, but (spoilers), would whatever magic that kept him human as long as he was 'unselfish' see being adopted (if Emma wasn't) as 'selfishness'? Because he's turning into wood because of his selfishness at running away- would that still hold true if he 'let' himself be adopted, if Emma wasn't... Hm...

Yeah; August ran away from the orphanage and what he agreed to do (to protect Emma) which is part of why things sucked for them.

Oh no I have no problem with Hansel and Gretal being horrified by the idea of being separated. It's the narrative I'm talking about there, which chose to make it a potential issue, not the character reaction.

Well he wasn't at an orphanage. He was in a foster home? Again though, narrative choices. I'm not questioning what August did. I'm questioning what the writers of the story have continually done.
