Maybe because when her sort of female character comes up, it's usually with a whole load of 'look at what a tomboy she is!' 'So not like the other girls!' 'betcha never saw a girl who could do that!'

I have to re watch that episode with the Applejack and Rarity sleepover. I think they managed to show their personalities clashing without making it a girly vs not girly thing. It's fantastic.

I don't really get that vibe at all. RBD read as definitely feminine to me from the very beginning, who just happened to be really into athletics and competition, and have a low-pitched-somewhat-throaty voice. I'm really surprised at all the people who seemed to classify her as male because of these things. Like I said elsewhere, maybe it's because I relate to it somewhat.

ETA: my point was to ask, where do you get that vibe from the show?

I agree completely. In fact, I think AJ is more tomboyish than her. But maybe it's the mane that makes them look tomboyish?

People are talking about whether AJ or RBD is more tomboyish, but you're missing the point.

Tomboyish =/= unfeminine.
