I hope this is more about her voice than how she acts. Sometimes I can understand how one might hear her as an adolescent boy whose voice is breaking... the voice acting on her is really very androgynous.

Especially when so many young boy characters are voiced by women. Dash's voice might not be that far off from what her actress would sound like trying to play a boy.

This. I wasn't certain she was female at first, because she has a sort of... rough? voice. And since you don't get to see any male ponies at first, you have nothing to compare her body shape to.

I think part of it is just the lack of obvious feminine visual identifiers. We tend to read cartoons as default-male if they aren't human or obviously feminized with bows and eyelashes or whatever.

Which is sad, but more about the culture at large than the OP specifically.

Sorry for the late reply, just checked f!s a few minutes ago.

I thought about it while reading the comments, and I really think it's the voice, yeah.

(I think reading fanfic didn't help; sometimes people write her a little oddly and, well, with very little characterization -I mean, the show itself doesn't depict the characters as giant wells of depth and complexity either, but still-, and half the time in those she registers as female and half as male, sometimes even in the same story, depending on the author.)

Also, I know it's because it's for kids, but a lot of the voice acting seems very extreme (Pinkie's rapid-fire high voice, Twilight's careful enunciation, Rarity's theatrics, I wonder if the actress hurts her throat every time RD's voice breaks, etc.) in the show and it's a little distracting.

I think it's because sometimes she seems to be there just as another "me too" or "witty remark" voice so I don't even think of what gender she was supposed to be and just throw something randomly until I see the pronouns again.

Sometimes she's just Rainbow Dash, neither female nor male, and, look, I know gender stereotypes are not okay which is why I tend to pay more attention to this sort of thing, which is probably why I'm even noticing this.

Before she would just be Rainbow Dash and enough.

...This is confusing.
