When I see someone saying their own story is terrible in the summary or author's notes, I tend to take them at their word and skip it. Insecurity I get--everyone feels it sometimes--but actually putting that on the story in question just sounds like the worst kind of pity-groveling. Also if their judgment's that bad, then their assessment is probably somewhat accurate.

yes. this so much. i never bother reading stories where the author says that because if i'm looking for a good story, why would i want to read a story that says "THIS IS BAD"?

i use to think it was 100% pity-grovelling, because if they think the story is that bad, why would they be posting and sharing it? but then i realised that a lot of people use it as a defence mechanism. they're posting and sharing the work because they think it's good, but they don't want to look like an idiot in case someone else thinks it's bad. so they come right out and go "blah blah blah it's terrible" in an attempt to beat any hypothetical negative commenters or judge-ers to the punch.

then i personally think they just look like even more of an idiot in the process.

I really wish women, in particular, would stop using this defence mechanism. It's an awful way to go through life.

what

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve read that this is actually a big problem for a lot of women when it comes to getting ahead. Due to being taught to be polite and modest, many women devalue themselves or their efforts when given a compliment, especially when it comes to presenting something they’ve worked, instead of just accepting the praise.

God, this. I've had to work hard on just smiling and saying 'Thank you' when receiving praise for something I've done. How messed up is that, to actually have to work on not undermining your own efforts?
