This film makes me angry because it uses modern stagecraft and verse-speaking ideas that didn't exist before David Garrick (the 1740s-1770s) at the very very earliest. In a film set in the 1660s. *facepalm* I get that they wanted to make a big contrast once they switch roles, and that the presentational acting style of the pre-Restoration era isn't really all that enjoyable for modern audiences. But there were other ways of making it more accessible; just focusing on how complex the relationship between Ned and Margaret is would have made their stage scenes together more deep and powerful than what Ned had previously been producing.

By turning it into a "revolutionary" new thesis of stagecraft, it loses almost all of its historical credibility in my eyes. As an exploration of gender and sexuality issues though, it's pretty interesting.
