Asking for physical help IRL?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Okay F!S, I'm in a jam and I could use your advice.

When is it okay to flag someone down, or otherwise get/draw attention to yourself when you are physically ill or injured? In specific, not your family, but not strangers either, like coworkers, classmates, roommates, teachers, etc.

At what point is it okay to say to yourself, "Okay this feels really bad and I need help?"

Ex-- this afternoon I was disoriented, short of breath, extremely nauseous, vomiting, shaking, had a bad headache, and couldn't think straight. I was going to ask a roommate if they could help me out, but I chickened out and instead went and laid down for a few hours.

I'd say if your thinking is literally compromised, it's definitely time.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to keep that in mind next time. Like I said below this, I was having extreme difficulty completing thought loops and appealing to logic.

Man I was lucky I didn't hurl in my neighbors' yard. :X That would have been humiliating. I did have the presence of mind to go inside though.

Yeah, and Ir ealize your reasoning might be crap then, so drill it into your sane brain now... having trouble thinking... ask for help.

I'm betting people will see your out of it enough that they'll help you with the rest... but that can be a sign that serious shit is happening to you and it could get worse... so you want someone with wherewithal involved because you might not realize you need to go to the hospital or whatnot.

If you are experiencing all of those things, especially without any obvious reason that you can think of, I'd say it's more than okay to ask a roommate or coworker, etc. for help. It's good you seem to be okay now, but your symptoms could have been warning signs of anything from a heart attack to bacterial meningitis.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

I feel like I'm a somewhat better place than I was a few hours ago, for sure. But I'm not confident in my assessment of that, because I kept getting stuck in stupid thought loops about what I should do. I.e.: "I should sit." Standing for a few minutes staring at nothing, "I should sit." Wander a few paces, stare at nothing. "Should I get help?" Consider, blank out, stare at nothing. "I should sit down."

I'm past that now, but I still feel fuzzy headed.

I hope you feel better soon--but it wouldn't hurt to let someone close to you know you were feeling seriously ill and arrange for them to call and check on you. What you're describing sounds pretty scary to me.

Dude. Please tell someone who is physically near you how you feel, and please also see a doctor ASAP if you have insurance/health care.

And drink some water. You may be dehydrated, as mental confusion is one of the symptoms, and it is at least an easy fix if that's a problem.

Feel better!

Definitely get help (to get to a doctor) now. Seriously, blanking like that can be a sign of some serious shit.

This would be the time when it's okay. In fact, any time when you feel so ill that you don't believe you can move without staggering or falling, or if breathing is difficult, talking is difficult, or *thinking* is difficult.

Jayzus, i hope you're okay.

LifeAlert, OP. One press of a button, and you get service that you actually pay for...so, no relying on kindness of strangers / wondering if your help will be helpful at all, etc.
