Nah. I think SJW are annoying but they're actually right in that Finnick is not white. He's described as having tan skin. Yes, he also has green eyes but someone can have both green eyes and also be tan. This especially should be true in the future where logically more biracial people would exist.

Plus there's the fact District 4 is likely somewhere warm since their strengths are swimming and using tridents and if they were in the north those things would be unavailable for most of the year. So District 4 is likely in the south which means its probably an area that currently has a large Latino population. That would make it even more possible for a green-eyed, tan person to exist in the future.

That doesn't mean I necessarily wanted Jesse Willaims for the role (I never heard of him before Cabin in the Woods) but I do wish the filmmakers had not casted someone so pale. I really cannot see this actor being believable as Finnick. They're going to have to give him a fake tan and that always looks stupid (I will never understand the fascination with tanning, both the spray type and tanning beds).

Oh my god, "tan" is NOT a POC signifier. The fact that it can be doesn't change the fact that a large number of unquestionably white people are also always tan, for whatever reason.

Finnck is the one character who makes it to Mockingjay who can be interpreted as not white. If you can't see why people are upset with the casting I'm wasting my time.

what you are saying sounds a lot like you want to make Finnick a token.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Who makes it to Mockingjay only to be killed for plot advancement, just like, hmmm, who else? Rue and Cinna? Nope, I can't see why anyone would be upset with the movie having another disposable POC.

tan means tan, dumbass. Nothing else. Just tan.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Tan means not white, dumbass.

No it doesn't, dumbass.

Tan means brown, dumbass.

I get tan in the summer when I've been swimming every day, as did all the little blonde girls on the swim team with their white-blonde hair. Guess what? Still whitey-white-white.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-29 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
A white person with a tan looks very different from someone who is naturally darker. It's summer. There are plenty of people around who are darker than normal, but that still doesn't mean they have tan skin. Tan would mean someone who is naturally darker but than white but also not black.

You're misinformed about the nature of skin tone vs race. Though race maybe suggests a certain range of skin tones, the fact of the matter is you can have POC with light skin and white people with dark skin. Even white people can get very dark, and even black people can get very light, so much that if you only looked at their skin color without actually seeing the person you'd likely be very surprised if you adhere to preconceived notions about skin tone and race.

In my copy, he's described as having golden skin, not tan skin.
