Manual search is actually pretty easy to figure out, with a little experimentation. When tag filtering went down, I was annoyed, but I eventually realized that I should actually have been using manual search the whole time. The only thing is that it doesn't allow you to sort for hits / updated / etc. But for finding fics with the selection of tags you want or don't want, it's very good.

Just do a little experimentation - type the pairing into the tag field, then try searching, and then keep playing around with it until you find the proper syntax. It's really very intuitive, and a really good tool.
