I think you should watch it, but don't start with the first episode, because it's not as good as the rest of season 1. It doesn't really matter the order you watch them in, so I would suggest watching something closer to the middle of the first season.

(On another note, you know what's really cool? Looking at the animation quality from the first episode, and then looking at the leaked season 3 songs, or the season 2 finale. Twilight's hair! Almost-3D characters! So cool!)

I enjoyed that two-parter more than most of the other episodes and was very disappointed at the episodic - adventure ratio the rest of the season followed.
anyway, op, I say watch all the episodes before checking out the fandom.
be super careful when browsing tumblr (there is sometimes untagged porn and shitty opinions and the like; using tumblr savior for the tagged "nsfw", "porn", etc. might help)
generally, I suggest avoiding the fandom beyond safe-for-work fanart, fanmusic, fanfics, etc., because while there are sane fans, the are other very vocal ones that can turn you away from the show.
