You could fap to every other game at the moment, same type of gruffy dark haired guys everywhere. Dante always struck me as the japanese action hero type so I can see how this http://i.imgur.com/pLVdg.png does not translate well to the fanbase. Not saying white haired demon guys are unique, but you could tell Dante from the crowd of video games.

That said, just like I'll never understand being proud not to like something when a lot of people like it, the opposite seems just as stupid to me. Good job on being egdy~?

Hey, he was hot before, too! That said, I don't mind too much.

He's not ugly in theory, but I just can't not see him as a Tameem self-insert and that blocks any fapping that could happen for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-31 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
They could have done worse to his looks, I guess. I'm reserving judgement on any part of DmC until I've played the game though.

That said, I am actually quite looking forward to the game coming out, whether it's good or bad, because the DMC fandom has been dead for far too long, and this might breathe some life back into it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think we'll see much new in the fandom, since everyone in the DMC fandom seems to hate new!Dante, and the Castlevania reboot from a few years ago did absolutely jack shit to breathe life into the fandom like I had hoped.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who's been a fan of the series for a long time now, I am honestly just bone-tired of the amount of hate present in all corners of this fandom. I've had to stop looking at the fandom altogether (which means trying to put blinders on when looking for any information at all) just because the backlash is so insane. I can understand why people are so upset, but a lot of them also come up with stupid reasons to be upset (like accusing the designer of making Dante look like himself... you're kidding, right? Don't bother trying to show me pics, because I've seen them all and am not convinced).

In any case, I do think the game looks pretty cool and I've become gradually more excited to try it over time, even though I may have started off with the same kneejerk reaction. But I personally thought that DMC4 was a tragedy and that the series was heading in a really poor direction, so I guess that just makes me more open to accepting something different. It's a reboot, so I'm not really expecting it to be the same thing, just hopefully have enough vague reference to the original to make it somewhat familiar. And, well, stylish gameplay.

I love you for this comment. Just sayin'. I wish you weren't anon so we could be frands because you seem like the most level headed DMC fan ever.

I think I'd feel a lot better about this game if I had stayed away from the fandom while it was being developed. Both the backlash to the game and the backlash to the hate for the game and just all the emotions flying around have hurt my ability to be objective.

But I agree Capcom had to do something after the travesty that was DMC4's story. I dunno if this was it, but time will tell.

[identity profile] bluepunk.livejournal.com 2012-09-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Right on. I'm one of the only hardcore fans that have been on board with this re-design from the very start. I don't think his personality or body is very far off from DMC3 Dante, and the atmosphere and gameplay looks phenomenal. I can't believe his GD hair has raised such a stink among fanboys, I think he looks amazing and the re-design looks fresh yet familiar. A+ for a great secret.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
So then you must ~*love*~ that Vergil is the direct opposite of who he was.

[identity profile] bluepunk.livejournal.com 2012-09-01 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a good representation of his decent into darkness, yes. It is a prequel after all, and an alternate universe. So I think that it has a lot of potential.

I haven't played DMC in years and I know I'm not coming back for the reboot, but on a purely physical level his new character design does absolutely nothing for me.

Not that his old design was ~completely bizarre~ or ~new and unexpected~, but he still looked pretty distinct imo. Now, not so much.

Still, whatever; people who enjoy the new game? Good for them. If you are attracted to him, right on!

But of course not everyone is going to agree, and fandom always finds reasons to argue even when there isn't a huge change like this, so what can you do?

I can understand being upset. Maybe not the level of upset some of the fanbase is going through (I haven't been in the fanbase, so IDK firsthand), but hey.

He's hot, but he's not Dante.

Just create a new character, don't do a re-design that changes everything about an already known character.
altumcor: (Default)

[personal profile] altumcor 2012-09-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, with Dante, his calling card seems to be his red trench-coat and white shaggy hair. He looked so distinct that he was like an icon- fans can get a momentarily glimpse of him and straight away they know that that's a Dante. And there's been so many look-alikes in other games that it's gotten to that point where people might say that that character looks like a Dante-rip-off. Changing the design would like changing Bugs Bunny's into a sci-fi anthropomorphic superhero...

...like this!

And yeah, it was met with a generally negative response.

Now, I was pissed that they decided to change the character that I adored and made him into someone that's so unfamiliar. While I'm not usually against a reboot, Dante's original image was so ingrained into the fanbase that the creators of this new game knew this was going to raise a stink. I would've preferred it if this was an entirely new character set in the Devil May Cry universe.

But over time, I've gotten used to the change and I'm looking forward to the game's release (with a bit of reluctance). And I think the new look for this Dante has been adequately polished enough that he doesn't look so much like a creepy prison-rat I thought him to be in the first trailer, which I thought had him rendered poorly. It's going to be a one-off and you might as well enjoy the ride.

Now I'm sort of liking where this is going, and I especially like the fact that Vergil seems to come off as this character with an ambiguous alignment which verges on good (but I still have my suspicions). But this interpretation of Dante won't eclipse the original design conceived by Capcom.

Lmao, I love that comparison. When a character's look and attitude becomes that iconic, there's only so much you can change it without serious unhappiness. I agree that neo!Dante's look has drastically improved since that first trailer, which never should have seen the light of day before they polished things a bit more, TBH. If they had come out with the most recent handful of very nice previews first, the screams of bloody murder might have been more screams of cautious discontent.

....oh, he is hot. *hadn't seen this design until now*

though I get why the fanbase freaked out a little. People get protective of iconic beloved things, and that said, nerds are especially resistant to change. (I know, for I am one!) But I bet most are probably gonna play the game and see for themselves.

lol and I'll just happily fap to 'old' Dante and not bother with this 'new Dante' because he is not aesthetically pleasing to me, and I don't need to prove my faptitude to hipster fangirls. Have a good time?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
The main problem is he could he could have easily been the design for an entirely new game series, no connection to DMC, and been fine. Instead, they took an established series, redesigned the main characters, gave them pasts that destroyed their characters (Vergil being the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of who he was in the original), their mother is suddenly an ANGEL!!!!, and just... Yeah, no.
chronophage: (Default)

[personal profile] chronophage 2012-09-01 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I personally think he's really cute and just want to ruffle his hair. I have no qualms with his design (and subsequent redesign- he got a facial makeover after enough people shat themselves over him looking like Tameem), I'm just worried about how he's written. DMC as a franchise has never been the pinnacle of storytelling but at least Dante had a personality outside of saying "fuck you", which is all that DmC!Dante seems to be able to do. That aside, his body language and mannerisms are exactly the same as the old Dante.
I'm going way too deep into this, I digress. I'm excited for the game and I love how he looks.

Now let's talk about Vergil. New panties, please.

[personal profile] dratinis 2012-09-01 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Vergil's a cutie and I fucking love his coat, omg. I don't care if people think that it has this weird, prep-school look to it. I want it.

I just can't see him as anything but Tameem and Tameem is one ugly motherfucker.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
He looks ridiculous to me still, but after spending time with DmC at E3 I've decided he's still a sarcastic prick, which I loved about the old Dante. And that's the important part to me - when DmC was announced I thought he was going to be emo as all hell, because damn if he doesn't look the part.
darkmanifest: (Default)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2012-09-01 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, he was very easy on the eyes in that particular early graphic. But he looked like he just climbed out of an unmarked grave in his first animated appearance; the screenshots make me cringe even today, shoulda used one of those for this secret. And even now, with his perfected (and very appealing, IMO) face and figure, his haircut and clothes are awful. Skinny jeans, emo hair, and a dirty wifebeater? I don't know who decided that was more badass than...anything, ever. The coat is nice, though.

I seriously think Capcom could have avoided a lot of pain by giving the man his usual design while they changed so much else about the franchise. It just pissed off old fans more and made no difference to the new ones they were trying to attract, so I dunno how choosing to die on that specific hill benefited them in the least, especially considering how reboot!Vergil is an improvement on his original design without being a complete overhaul like reboot!Dante. I just...I really don't get the motivation behind that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Once on STFU Parents, a FB status was featured in which a woman said she named her son Dante because she thought the video game character was "a hot ass piece of pixelated tail". I can't help but wonder what that woman thinks about this redesign and if she now wishes she had named her kid Mario or Duke Nukem instead.
