Does anyone have transitional lenses? How do you like them? I managed to get some for free, but the response I've seen is very negative, my dad says they don't change when they're supposed to (Totally forgot he had them).

Useless. I got them because I wanted to switch out of wearing contacts, but they are utterly worthless for driving. Actually, they're pretty much worthless for just about anything where the sun isn't beating directly down on you.

I had them for a few years when I was younger, and I can't say I've noticed that much of a difference after going back to regular lenses. I do see the difference in photographs, though; my regular lenses don't eventually get stuck in the colour of old shoe.

Mine are pretty good. The only problem is that the glasses only work when they're hit with UV rays, so any situation where it's bright, but your glasses aren't getting hit, they don't transition. (Driving a car, for one example.)

Also, if you take any pictures outside, you're glasses will end up dark, and that can be frustrating for some people.

If you got them for free, yay! But you may wish to have some wrap-arounds, or go-overs, or whatever those sunglasses are that go over your normal glasses for driving/other.

Hm. Good thing I'm keeping a backup pair (and that I don't drive yet.) I was kind of worried about it getting too dark in the daytime.

They don't. Or, mine don't, at least. It's actually been a problem once or twice. :/

+1 Go over glasses are one of the world's greatest inventions ever.

I got mocked at camp for having "old people glasses", or "bug eye glasses", but they really are the best, aren't they? Hateres gonna gate. /shrug.

I havent heard the phrase go over glasses before. Is that like clip-ons? Or the things that literally sit over/around your glasses?

I finally got a set of the latter... They look kind of meh, but they're wonderful.

I don't know if that's their real name, but I don't know what they're called, and for me, they're the ones that sit over/around your glasses.

I've also heard of them as being called "old people sunglasses", and if you google it, that's the kind I'm talking about. |D

I sometimes call them cocoons, since I wear that brand. I have a pair of one of the 'slim' models, and they don't look bad.

Oh, those are nice! Mine are not nearly as cool looking. :D

Thanks for letting me know, I'll be looking into these at some point!

Ah, this is actually good to know, so thank you for asking! I need new glasses soon and was considering transitional ones, but I'm reconsidering based on the comments.

i do, and personally i could go without them. my glasses dont cover my entire field of vision and so they dont work very well in protecting my eyes from the sun.

as someone else said, they do tend to get kinda... discolored, with time? i've had mine for several years and, while it's not noticeable when i'm wearing them or to other people, there is a slight discoloration that you can see if you place the glasses up against something white. not a big deal though.

and as another person brought up, you have to be in direct contact with sunlight for them to transition, so if you need glasses to drive, i'd recommend getting those custom attachable sunglasses things for your glasses.

in any case mine do work in the sense that they change when they're supposed to, but they're not effective as sunglasses.

Temperature changes make them change slower, they change slower with time naturally, and they change slower if they're in glass. Also (and this might be your dad's problem) once you get used to them constantly changing color, you stop noticing that they're changing. I spent a long time wondering why the hell my lenses weren't going dark when I went out in bright sunlight before someone pointed out they'd thought I was wearing sunglasses. As long as you get new lenses once a year like you're supposed to, they work perfectly.

For you, I'd say the problem is that you probably got cheap ones. Good transitional lenses in my part of the U.S. cost $80+ on top of regular lenses prices, and I've not seen them that much cheaper elsewhere.

I used to. My computer would make them tint, it wound up training me out of wearing them while on the computer. I *still* can't wear my glasses at the computer and I haven't had transition lenses in years.

Mine are Transitions brand and are currently four years old. They still go completely clear and darken very quickly. I love mine to bits and will get them again when my prescription actually changes enough to force me to replace my glasses. (I'm afraid I can't afford the Brand Name Price attached to these lenses on a whim.) As others have said though, they aren't very good for driving since they do not darken in the car. I have a pair of dark polarized clip ones that fit over them nicely for that reason.

Older lenses were really bad about not clearing up after a while, or being slow to change tint, but I haven't noticed that problem with any of the lenses I've had in the last fifteen years or so. I'm old enough to remember when the changeable tint was something you could only get in glass lenses and those were pretty sucky. I actually had a pair of regular photo-chromatic lenses and a second pair of "photo sun" lenses for sunglasses, they started out tinted and got darker. Yes, I'm pretty much nocturnal and dislike the burning daystar. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
I had them a few years ago and they were rubbish. They were really slow to react, (especially when coming inside), somehow usually tinted in flash photos, and after a while they just got stuck in an in-between colour all. the. time. Not worth the stupid amount of money I handed over for them.

Now I just have a massive pair of sunglasses that sit nicely over my regular glasses if it's sunny out. Might look weird but it works perfectly for me, so I couldn't care less.
