As much as I am hesitant to admit it, I kind of have to agree with you. I am so tired of having to censor things in my fics, even things that would be canon otherwise. If Character A would call Character B a slut, then how does it make sense to suddenly make their dialog in fic resemble that of the average SJW? But if you don't then you get your ass handed to you. It's frustrating.

In that context, it's the audience's responsibility to recognise that characters do not usually = mouthpieces for the writer.

If the audience is stupid, well.

Unfortunately, in my experience the average SJW is precisely that stupid. If a character does something they don't agree with, automatically the writer is a bad person. Even if that character's actions are presented in a bad light.

I remember a webcomic where a female spouted rather... misogynistic views, and someone flamed the author.

They said it felt too 'realistic' and that the character actually believed it, so therefore it had to be deep-rooted in the author. It felt too real!

It's not that they're stupid, per se--they just want to control the world. In that Marxist way that SFF writers were warning people about in the 1970s with all the utopian dystopias...see also Orwell's 1984, particularly the sections on Newspeak and doublethink (doublethink especially).

No guesses where the SJWs want to be, in the power / hierarchy structure. All the while claiming they are "fighting for" the very people they are grinding into the ground, with their smiling oppression.

(Or Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale....really, I could go on and on all day.)

It would be nice if OP was referring to IC dialogue, but I don't see what about this secret made you think that. Sounds like they just want to be able to refer to characters as slutty. Or like they're just trying to stir shit up. One of those.

Meh. I can see the anon's point. It's not necessarily commentary on the secret itself, it's the whole witch-hunt mentality that has infested some corners of fandom.

It doesn't bother me personally, because I don't give a fuck, but I can see that it is a serious problem in some places. I've seen people get piled on because they used IC dialog where they called a character a slut. Honestly, though? I don't particularly care one way or another if someone actually thinks a character is a slut. Not my problem.

I can see anon's point too! I just thought they were giving OP too much credit. It's absurd when you're able to conceptualize that people write about violent rape fantasies without being rapists, but can't imagine people writing angry, IC dialogue that they wouldn't use in RL.

I use the word, but I think it's pretty clear to everyone I know that I don't think it's an insult and I don't apply it solely to women. Online, it's the kind of language that gets used by the worst kind of misogynistic bottom-feeders, so while I wouldn't judge anyone just for using it: Context is everything?

Yeah, fair enough. Context does matter a lot. At my job, my coworkers are... extremely caustic about certain things. But we're used to it, and the climate is such that we can get away with calling each other a fat lazy fuck who ate all the pies (as one example) because it's not actually meant seriously. While I might call Coworker 1 that, I probably wouldn't call someone not used to our workplace environment that.

But it's also the sort of thing we're used to. We do it all the time, and everyone knows it's not actually meant seriously.

Is this making any sense? I'm kind of loopy on NyQuil. Stupid cold going around...

yeah makes sense. it's the difference between your workplace, where you know everyone and their sense of humour, and the internet. I know that a lot of people online, probably even the majority sometimes, see the word slut as exactly what people are saying down-thread: the easiest way to imply a woman is worthless. So like, among my friends I reclaim the word, but on a webpage anyone can read I'd rather just be boring and PC.

No worries, you're not tripping on NyQuil yet heh
