Did you miss the entire part about how people were starving and living in squalor and how the games meant that the winner's District would have food as a reward so families would be fed?

Pretty easy to miss given Collins can't be bothered to remember it herself and gets distracted by the cliche love triangle to the detriment of both plot and worldbuilding.

I'm not a HG fangirl, but even I think that's unfair. The love triangle is part of the plot but relatively small - the games and revolution were a lot more important than the love triangle ever was. Particularly because that's Katniss's opinion, too.

I'm not offended because you think the book sucked, I'm amazed that it's honestly the worst thing you've ever read. There are a lot of shitty books and fanfic and articles out there and think you must not read much if this is the worst of the worst for you.

Except there's a thing called common sense that makes you stop reading a badfic/articles/whatever before you get too far. For a serie such as HG (first book was good, second OK, third sucked but to each its opinions), you expect good writing.

Tbh, I read the whole third book even though I kept cringing just because I hoped it'd get better. It didn't.

Actually 2 and 3 are the only ones I read only saw the movie of 1 and I couldn't bring myself to fight through Collins prose to read a story I knew partly from the film and partly from the whole internet talking about the series.

The world had fantastic potential, the games were an awesome concept, Katniss was a weak character who got too sidetracked mentally by her very juvenile obsession with the Peeta/Gale issue to be interesting, and all of the set-up was wasted. I would way rather have read the same events from, say, Haymitch's perspective. Or Finnick's, or Joanna. Or even Katniss's mother.

The love triangle doesn't take up that much of the plot. Starting at about 1/4 of the way into book 2 Katniss thoughts can be summed up as PEETA PEETA PEETA. oh hi gale i got my bff back. PEETA PEETA PEETA. GALE YOU RUINED MY LIFE!!!! PEETA PEETA. THE END.

Yeah, I think the romance could have been handled better (in particular it got annoying since Katniss was often thinking about how she "didn't love Peeta" one minute to making herself ill worrying about him and being unable to sleep if he wasn't by her side) but it's not some huge love triangle that some people (and in particular the media) make it out to be.

No yeah, that part is pretty easy to miss given the fact that despite supposedly starving most of their lives no one seems to suffer for it and the way Katniss is a dumbass regarding food management.

There's also the part where Katniss almost died due to a lack of food and water during the first few days of the Games and it's implied (or maybe it's outright stated, I can't remember) that in other Games tributes have died that way.
