i'm kind of annoyed that i can't use this word anymore either. i don't think having a lot of sex is bad, but i've always used slut to mean somebody who uses sex or sexuality to manipulate people. cause those people exist and they are gross. so if i can't use the word slut for them then i'm going to need another word.

Yep, that's what I used to think it meant/is the impression I got from it. To be honest, I don't think there's any one true and concrete definition of a word like that, though, and finding another way to say it seems easier than continually offending people.

"User"? "Manipulative douchebag"?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
certainly you can use those words, but they're not specific enough. cause people who use sex (which is supposed to be about intimacy and connection and pleasure) to manipulate are their own special brand of douche.

Yeah, I do not get why people can't just let the meaning of a word change over time. Seriously, the ENTIRE english language is a big exercise in people using words in contexts different from what they were originally created in, and the misused-version of that word catching on with more and more people, until the definition of the word changed. That (plus mixing in other languages) is kinda how language evolves.

So I don't see why the word "slut" can't morph from "promiscuous woman" to "douchebag of either gender who uses sex to manipulate people". Cause you know, promiscuous women in general don't deserve insults, but sexually manipulative douchebags do.

And "slut" even did mean other things before it exclusively meant "promiscuous woman." See: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=slut

Chaucer uses sluttish (late 14c.) in reference to the appearance of an untidy man.

And I have a children's book written in the 1960s that uses it... for a preteen-aged girl, to mean her room and clothes are always untidy.

because when you're on the internet you are sharing your words with the lowest kind of misogynistic neaderthals who consider every single thing a woman does to be "sexually manipulative", because don't you know, a woman's sexuality is always about them.

Honestly I am kind of on your side, because I use the word in RL with my friends and it means whatever we want it to. But saying "oh it's okay to use it an insult towards people who use their sexuality to get things" is just rolling out the red carpet for the worst kind of douchebag.

sa

This actually makes a lot of sense. Good comment!
