I don't use social networking, but I do use sites like Tumblr/LJ/DW to try and make friends...and for years I've been failing spectacularly at it. I have a grand total of one, who lives in another country.

I try hard to be polite and friendly, and in my main fandom I've actually written a couple of popular fanfics, so sometimes people contact me because of that. Sometimes we even start chatting, but sooner or later it breaks down, they get tired of me and stop replying. I guess I'm not as cool as they were imagining, or something. I don't know where it goes wrong, it just feels lonely and depressing. More than once I've thought about leaving the fandom and deleting my fics, but I can't quite bear to let go of them.

I'm glad your cat came home safely. One of mine is curled up next to me right now. Thankfully they never venture further than the garden (the younger likes to chase bees/spiders/everything, the older just watches).
