Yes. Because there's no such thing as gay people, they're just a construct of erotica, so they get their own genre, like fiction that has werewolves and unicorns.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that! (I mean, as a lesbian myself, I've certainly never seen any unicorns). I just meant how would making the two main male characters of an anime gay, make it any different from ubiquitous BL series like Banana Fish or Fake? I'm genuinely curious. (And I'm also not familiar with this series at all)

What's TTGL? In my head it reads as "The Totally Gay Lesbians", but I know that can't be right.

T & B isn't solely focused on the relationship (and presumably wouldn't be if it was portrayed as a romantic pairing), and from my understanding of what is labeled BL, it usually has homosexuality as the main "theme." T & B is marketed to more of a universal crowd, so it isn't the type of show that would have gay male characters to supposedly appeal to younger women, it would just have the potential to be a very positive representation.

Ok, that does make sense. I'm admittedly cynical about gay characters in Japanese animation equaling queer representation or gay rights, for a variety of reasons.

Er...not to be a dick but you might want to actually watch this show before saying it would become BL. It feels kind of insulting for someone to reduce the series down to that if the two mains had a romance - romance isn't the focus of the show even if it happens. Reminds me of when people hear about the sponsor angle in the show and go "OH PFFT IT'S JUST A GIANT ADVERTISEMENT".

I can understand a bit if you're unfamiliar with the series but...yea.

No it wouldn't; it's the same reason No.6 isn't BL or even shounen ai) despite having two main male characters who kiss on more than one occasion (passionately at that) and are clearly shown to have feelings for one another.

Except it kind of is? Banana Fish is definitely not a rare case or a trail blazer when it comes to having gay characters in a shoujo series.
