Charities Close to your Heart

What charities do you care about deeply, donate to when you're able, or volunteer with if you have time?

I'm currently interning with Planned Parenthood, because I feel passionately about the work they do. I donate blood to the Red Cross whenever I can (even though I have real problems with some of their policies). And whenever I'm watching videos online, Free Rice is my go-to time killer.

What charities do you feel strongly about?

MSF! (Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors Without Borders.) My Mum donated to them for years, and I got sort of caught up in doing the same, too. And I also donate blood to the Red Cross - I figure that there's absolutely no point in boycotting them for some of their more problematic policies, since it's only hurting people who need help.

One of my New Year's intentions (I don't resolutions) was to donate more to charity. So far this year, I've given money to
- girleffect.org
- local animal rescues (I used to volunteer) ***
- Project Unbreakable
- Planned Parenthood
- local GLBT community center
- St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
- local literacy promotion programs ***
- local low/cost spay/neuter clinic ***
- local branch of the National Exchange Club (fights child abuse and domestic violence; I interned there and loved it) ***
- local food bank

Before the year's over, I intend to give to
- local suicide hotline
- local chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse
- plantabillion.org
- local wildlife rehabilitation
- local Red Cross
- shop for Angel Tree at Christmas

I always donate to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and I like the Electronic Freedom Foundation. I donate to local animal shelters and AIDS charities. I also really like Heifer International and I'll second MSF. I care about a lot of stuff, I guess.
