Thoughts on a recipe....conclusion
(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 03:22 am (UTC)(link)So I went ahead and made the "pancake casserole" (as I have dubbed it). I nixed the cheese. A nonny wondered if cheese and maple would go together, which made me think maybe not. Might do cheese with unmapled sausage in the future.
Three fail points happened. Fail 1 was the hashbrowns. I didn't cook them long enough by themselves. They were cooked through but not crispy like I wanted. Fail 2 was no salt on the hashbrowns. I figured the bacon would be salty enough for everything, but it was all on top and the potatoes were all on bottom. It wasn't terrible so long as you had some bacon in your bite with it, but very bland if you didn't. Fail 3 was the meats. They were precooked and drained, but apparently they still had some grease to give. When the casserole was done, the surface was an oily mess. I blotted it up with paper towels.
Good points....1 Bacon makes up for a myriad of culinary sins (even if it is the cause of one of them). 2. The center batter cooked through. I used the 'make sure the baking dish is hot' method. 3. Everyone who tried it seemed to like it. 4. Several requests for the recipe. :)
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the results.
Thanks everyone for the tips! :D
PS: I looked up Toad in the Hole recipes and have now added it to my "I must try making this" list.
