Not a TV show, but Metal Gear basically did this. It started with MGS having some bro-flirting and sexualised violene between men, then MGS2 and MGS3 had minor character canon gay pairings, MGS4 had a major male character kissing another major male character in an easteregg, and then MGSPW had two major male characters having sex on the beach in an optional mission and a subplot about Alan Turing, homophobia and a character who identifies as a political lesbian. It's not always free from fail by any means but it's been very interesting watching (some, by no means all of) the broguy half of the fandom go into tinhatty denial fits about all the canon gay. Some of the Youtube comments have been precious.

It also makes for the best group discussions, especially if you have diverse representation: The Slash Fangirl; the one who's blocked any instance of homoeroticism out of their memory; the flat earth believer who, for some reason, is dead sure that two guys having sex in a box on the beach doesn't indicate any gay whatsoever - except for that fight between Vamp and Raiden, that was so gay; the one who sees all the homoerotic sub-text/text but thinks aforementioned fight isn't one of them, and it is the coolest fight ever how can licking white goo off a crotch knife mean something else; and the guy who just mentions every now and then how he'd like to be plowed by Big Boss.

I love all the 'IT'S NOT GAY BECAUSE...' tinhat denialism. There are so many variants. But, Joy and Strangelove? Totally gay, no attempts at denial. :/

Oh that sounds awesome and very entertaining, haha. I'm honestly kind of surprised that I haven't heard of any of that before, sounds like there wasn't much of a fuss kicked up aside from the "la la la I can't see the gay!" reaction you mention. I suppose that might be partly why I wanna see how the reaction to an American TV series doing the same would go, games are still under the radar in some ways.
