Well I've seen straight asexual-leaning folk identify as queer, so there's that under the "not attracted to their own gender" bit.

I think it's just generally used for people who are not 100% hetero.

Hmmm. I thought it was possible to be hetero and asexual, though? (Or at least that's what my two friends who I've just recently found out are asexual insist.) Or do you just mean not hetero in the usual/conventional way? That would fit in the "anything that's not mainstream" definition that I've heard (I think a straight/asexual person was one of the examples I've seen, actually).

No, you're right, it's possible to be hetero and asexual. The straight/gay/bi/etc part of the asexual identity is generally who you're romantically attracted to rather than sexually attracted to. And yeah, I don't think a hetero asexual person would be considered conventionally heterosexual because there's the "queerness" of the asexuality in there.

I think my problem with "anything that's not mainstream" is that you're putting proclivities under the label of "queer" when I've seen it mostly used as an orientation identification - which is why I specified the not hetero part. I've not seen it used as a label by people for things like kink.

Honestly most of the time I've seen people choose the label is when they're not 100% anything - not quite identifying as bisexual or straight or gay or anything, and so choose a more ambiguous label like "queer". But that's just been my experience, I'm not sure that's a universal thing.

I'd be curious to hear why these straight people on Tumblr are identifying as queer. I mean in the end I think a person can use whatever label they want to ID themselves, but it does strike me as pretty weird for a self identified straight person to also want to use the label of queer.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Part of the first definition I found for queer is "strange or odd from a conventional viewpoint" which seems like a straight asexual person would fit, but I also kind of remember seeing the argument that that doesn't count because "queer" must involve the same sex.

That was part of my original confusion. I've seen straight people who are into bondage (for example) call themselves queer because bondage is not in the mainstream and therefore queer to them I guess? I didn't think that was right, but I'm far from an expert on the subject so I thought maybe there was a meaning I just didn't know about. As for why they'd want to call themselves queer, the accusations I've seen are that they just want to be seen as "special" or "different".

Now I'm confused again...do you think it's more about how an individual person chooses to identify rather than meeting a specific set of criteria? Of the two friends I mentioned before, one reluctantly said he's asexual if he had to pick a label but doesn't really see the point in them, and the other is adamant that she's completely straight (she claims orientations are about genders and since she's 0% interested in women, she's 100% straight even though she's also asexual because asexual is a type of sexuality or subcategory or something, but not an orienation because it's not in relation to gender? something like that). I doubt she'd describe herself as queer, but maybe she should?

The Tumblr thing I've seen (and I think I've also seen it on ONTD when the subject's come up) is that queer = interested in the same sex, and if you're not then you can't call yourself queer. So the kinky straight people can't call themselves queer, and straight asexual people can't, although gay or bi asexual people can. And I'm pretty sure there were some hetero/asexual girls calling themselves queer, and the other people were like "you're girls who like guys, therefore you're straight, therefore you can't call yourself queer" and saying they were only saying they were queer because they wanted to be "cool" or something.

I don't even know. There are so many different groups of people saying different things it's hard to keep track and it all seems so complicated.

as an ace myself, i don't think asexuality is inherently queer, especially if the ace in question is heteroromantic. "queer" as a label, as far as i know, is for those who aren't straight, gender binary and/or heteronormative in nature, and i think asexuality is neutral in regards to heteronormativity, and that being heteroromantic paired with said asexuality makes you more or less straight.
