(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 10:29 am (UTC)(link)As a Russian I found it more amusing than offensive, in a 'LOL, cranberry", 'cranberry' being a word used to describe misinterpretations of Russia, Russian culture and Russians in foreign (mostly American) media (there is a historical anecdote explaining that one).
We have a strong sense of being... well, a powerful nation (which at this point might be delusions of grandeur), so those dumb Americans? Yeah, they can't actually offend us. We know we are better and smarter then them, so we laugh at their ignorance. I'm not saying that I agree with the sentiment - just tryin' to explain it.
As for Anastacia... see, here it also might be that we don't care about that kind of misrepresentation all that much. A frequent mash-up of Soviets and Nazis as homogenized 'villains' to fight, for example, is much worse and much more offensive for us, a country that calls WWII "The Great Patriotic War" than any romantization of Tsarist Russia can be.
However that obsession with Rasputin is... unsettling, though understandable.
I mean, it's obviously much easier to make a cartoonish evil mage out of an (admittedly eccentric and notorious) hanger-on of the royal family, than try to dwell into a clusterfuck of a century (if not more) of social strife, the effect of WWI on Russia and the father of your beautiful and precious heroine being an exceptionally shitty ruler (Nicholas II was, admittedly, a loving husband and devoted father, but a monarch? Yeah, no).
