Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

brightblueink: Kyuubey's face. It's terrifyingly cute. (Contract?)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-09-03 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I didn't even think about it but Maximus bothered me so much, so yes, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is your icon of KYUUBEY'S GODDAMN EYES?

*endless horror*
brightblueink: Mami haughtily tossing her hair over her shoulder. (Hair swish)

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-09-03 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes they are. :3c

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this!

Didn't Maximus also swordfight and punch people?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That he did. Maximus was pretty badass, actually.

I suppose in animation, if you're going to spend all the time and effort animating a character, you might as well make it a memorable character, as opposed to a movable prop. Plus, talking/otherwise possessing near human sentience animals are always a big hit with children.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I do appreciate when an animal acts its part. No cross-specisms, no super-intelligence. Just the animal it is.

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-09-03 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes I like this too. I like non-talking animal companions! It pretty much drastically changes the tone of a film.

Because all animals are dogs!

Maximus wasn't a dog. He was a humanoid horse (a horse with human personality and behavior.) Nearly all Disney animals (and some of their inanimate objects such as the rug in Aladdin) act that way.
intrigueing: (respawn lol)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2012-09-03 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the OP means he acted just like a dog (scent-tracking, sitting, heeling, wagging his tail, etc).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-03 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It bothers me that not even dogs act like dogs in fiction. Seriously, I'm starting to suspect that many problems new and younger dog owners encounter happen because they have no fucking idea how domesticated animals act IRL and kids have no idea how real dogs behave because their only experience came from stupid movies and their parents - as people who also lack any experience when it comes to animals - did not correct them. The number of times I hear people leaving their little kids alone with the family dog and the things older kids do to their dogs, dear god. Okay, dog attacks happen even with the most experienced owners, but the things some inexperienced owners do are... amazing.

Can I ask you to elaborate just out of pure curiosity?

Yeah, I did get kind of annoyed when they Played him For Laughs as a dog

Ugh, I didn't think Maximus was fun at all, but besides I wholeheartedly agree. The only humanlike animal companions were the twins. And they were human.

I know it's Disney's thing but come on! I'd half guessed it was an enchanted prince who only had a vague idea of how horses act or something. Same with the chameleon by the way. I mean, why.

Er, I think you answered your own question: because it's Disney's thing. Watching a Disney movie and being annoyed at the anthropomorphic animals is like watching a superhero movie and being annoyed at the costumes. If it's not your thing that's totally fine, but unfortunately you're not going to escape it unless you don't watch those movies at all. *shrugs* It's kinda part and parcel of the genre, for better or for worse. But Disney movies are aimed at primarily young kids, and young kids loooooooooove human-like animals, so that's the reason they're always there.

With you on Maximus. He had good moments and I liked him well enough, but I would've liked him more if he'd acted more like a horse instead of a dog.

The only complaint I have against the horse in Brave is that sometimes his motions were a little too catlike, especially when he was galloping full-tilt. I feel like the animators could've done a little more homework in that regard. Loved everything else about the horse, though.

Mulan's horse was also just a horse, right? No punching, or swordfighting. But I can't remember his name. All the anthropomorphic stuff was left to Mushu (I wish he had been dialed down a few notches, because yikes).

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Mulan's horse was Khan and sometimes he did stuff that wasn't horsey- like putting a blanket over Mulan.
Belle's horse, Phillipe, has acted the most like an actual horse out of all the Disney animated movies.

omg Angus was GREAT. I wish there was a nice model of him available because he's gorgeous but there's not. :(

I'm more annoyed when it feels half-assed, like having animal companions pantomime human (or doglike, yes) movements that not only don't suit the type of animal, but aren't visually interesting on their body shapes either. Really old Disney stuff is better at pulling this off, imho.

Didn't really care for Maximus either but he was originally a dog based on Glen Keane's dog. So they just left the dog parts and added more silliness like swordfighting.
