Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

For Japan natives or those who know more than I do:

In one of my language/cultural books, they mentioned bathroom-only slippers. You're supposed to change your house slippers for these whenever you go into the bathroom. And don't accidentally wear them back out into the house!

But I can't recall ever seeing bathroom-only slippers in any form of Japanese media, be it manga, live-action, or anime, and I've watched and read a LOT. Help?

I saw these while I was living there. Not every place/home has them, but many do.

They do exist! Thank you!

Did you see any pattern to who used them and who didn't? Older people? More traditional families? Uncarpeted houses, maybe?

Thank you! Seeing the reasons for bathroom-only slippers explained makes it seem completely obvious why they exist.

I do find it curious that they don't seem to come up in fiction or media. How every interesting. Thanks again!

Er, no, sorry, this is false. What you're talking about is the *bath* room, i.e., the room containing the bath, and people do not ever wear slippers inside that room. What the thread OP is asking about is the *toilet*, which often does have slippers.

It isn't uncommon for single-residence homes and apartments to lack bathroom slippers. That said, a number of people do have bathroom slippers in their homes, and pretty much every hotel will have bathroom slippers as well. They're mentioned in your book to be on the safe side, in case you find yourself somewhere that does have bathroom slippers. That doesn't mean you'll necessarily ever see bathroom slippers.

I live in Japan and have lived with a few Japanese families. Just to clarify, when they say bathroom, they mean *toilet*, which is ETA: usually (in my old apartment it wasn't) a different room here than the room containing the bath or shower (which are sometimes also separate). Many households here do have special slippers for the toilet room, because it's seen as dirty to wear toilet slippers in the house (just like wearing shoes in the house). I would say most Japanese households have toilet slippers, but not 100%. It's generally considered polite, though.
