I think you're forgetting the third option where a lot of people seek out help but that doesn't solve their mental illness. Most mental illnesses can be managed but can't actually be cured, so they may still go through rough times where they need an outlet to vent.

No one should have to be their friend's therapist sure, but being in mental anguish should be enough of a reason to be able to bother other people every once in a while.

Actually the people who have bothered me the most with their problems often were the ones who were already in therapy, so I think it's really just a matter of what the person is like. Some people over share and some people don't share enough, but we all need to be respectful of other people while still maintaining our own mental health.
