You don't have to explain, you just have to be present. It's rude to constantly be texting or otherwise occupied when you're supposed to be with other people. Just because your online friends are real friends too doesn't mean you can ignore the people literally sitting across the room from you. If they have to ask, you're doing it too much. Split your time appropriately, even if it means saying no to a few invitations, so at least when you're with your RL friends you're not being so inconsiderate.

I thought OP did say "no" to invitations, which was the whole point of the secret? They never said anything about texting their fandom friends while with their irl friends. Unless I misread the secret which it possible, now that I think about it, but it still seems more like they were cancelling plans/declining invitations rather than being there but texting all the time.

Not the OP, but I'm pretty sure what they were saying is that they were declining invitations to be able to spend communication time with their fandom friends.
