Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

But the people you suggested aren't poets. They're rappers, and music -- however lyrical the actual text may be -- isn't the same thing as poetry.

I'm sorry if your teacher didn't explain this to you in a respectful manner, but her basic point isn't wrong (IMHO at least).

Well, I think the contested definition of "poetry" is the very point the OP is making, don't you think, and perhaps some definitions are skewed by class/race alignments. Consider how poetry and lyrics were always considered the same once...

I agree. If there are courses devoted to studying rock & roll music, why not study rap lyrics?

Some colleges offer courses devoted to the study of rap lyrics/music. I think the real issue here is whether or not the study of those lyrics (or any lyrics) has a place in a course studying modern poetry, but isn't dedicated specifically to lyrics.

I think lyrics are poetry, but a lot of poets don't. I don't think all lyrics are good, but neither is all poetry.

Tupac actually did write poetry. Try looking for The Rose that Grew from Concrete.

Was coming here to say this...

I've heard of Tupac's lyrics being studied as poetry in a college class before. Anyway, is it all that different from studying, say, the Iliad as poetry? It was an oral work sung to music before it was written down.

This is an excellent point.

Poetry, like any other form of writing, is subjective. You don't consider it poetry. I do. I think the prof was a douche for being narrow minded in what she considered poetry as well.

Maybe not for being narrow-minded in *her* opinion, but in not allowing a student to have that opinion and explore it, I'd agree.
