In these situations I've found it's helpful to squint and pretend to be thinking about what's going on (Joey on "Friends" would probably call it smell-the-fart acting) rather than react to what's being said.

Then again, I was a government reporter for several years. Do you have any idea how much practice I have maintaining a neutral expression in the face of ridiculous pronouncements?
