See... this kind of shit really pisses me off. It seems like just about everyone has a story of some horrible fucking teacher (or more than one) who ruined poetry for them forever by not being able to teach it or by not giving a fuck. Which, marginally in their defense (but not much), is probably how it was taught to THEM, too.

I feel strongly driven to go out and try to re-teach poetry to people PROPERLY. I'm trying to start a podcast segment doing just that.

I know, it's little wonder very few people enjoy poetry, with the way it's taught and introduced in schools.

Reminds me of how we dissected poetry for the better part of the year in high school. One time, instead of just doing the assignment, I wrote a poem about how it was the same as dissecting a frog--you find out what makes it work, but you sorta kill the frog.

The teacher was thrilled that I apparently understood exactly what we were supposed to be doing. That was not a fun class.

Well, in fairness, poetry isn't something that's to everyone's tastes anyways - since I had a teacher who actually got really into poems...and managed to kill it by getting too into it. [Seriously, I still shudder thinking about the way she described the blood dripping].
