Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

Man, I wish people had laughed at my poetry in school, get me to realize that it's not actually that good. Like, at all.

Instead I put it on dArt! And now someone wants it tattooed on their body, and it's like. Person, go read some good poetry, please. My stuff is shit. (And, yes, I'm deleting it from dArt, but there's the one poem that people really seem to like, and I'd feel bad deleting it, because they like it.)

O_o It sounds like you are a terrible judge of your own worth and only believe people if they are putting you down. Cut that out, nonny. It won't make you a better poet. It's just a stupid defense mechanism that doesn't even work very well.

DA

Are you serious? If you go back and realize your silly angsty self-insert fic you wrote in HS was shit, this makes you a terrible judge of your own worth?

Please stop assigning self-worth issues at people off of off-hand comments, that's pretty gross.

"Please stop assigning self-worth issues at people off of off-hand comments, that's pretty gross."

...gross? Really?

What is this, a social justice issue?

No, it's just dumb. Somebody goes "my poetry sucked" and you go OH IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU GOT SOME SELF WORTH ISSUES THAR ANON let me assume you have issues? WTF is that?

Plenty of people think their older writing sucked and a lot of writing sucks because they were like 12 when they wrote it.

I think they said that because apparently not *everyone* thinks their poetry sucks. so. And OP is hardly an impartial judge.

This +10

As a teenager, my writing had a following.

That didn't mean my writing was good. Oh god, I'm rereading something right now and it really doesn't mean it's good.

Someone saying she needs to delete all her poetry because it's crap, should be insulted, and that the people who like her stuff have terrible taste -- has a self-worth problem. Jesus. She's not saying that anyone has told her that she's terrible. What's the better scenario -- she should just give up on writing poetry because she's crap? As long as she's working on her craft and putting it out, she's going to improve, meanwhile if people like her stuff enough to get it tattooed on, it's not that bad.

Being a beginning writer is not the worst thing in the world -- having people tear you down for is a great way to get people to give up, not improve.

Oh, no, really, it's bad, like "emo no 1 understaaaands me????!!!! I MUST MAKE EVERYTHING DARK AND DEPRESSING BECAUSE THAT'S TWUUU~~~~ ART" horrible poetry. I'm still writing, but I'm learning how to not suck at it. :D

Plus, the poem that someone wants tattooed is really just more of the "i'm so lonely why doesn't anyone love me" young teenager poetry BUT WITH WOLVES!

I've gotten a lot better since then, and I'm at the point where I'm not wincing when I'm rereading older work. (Though, "older" means "two-three years" back.)

Thank you for coming to my defense, though! That was really sweet of you. <3

Hold in there. I've no doubt you are better now than you were and will be better tomorrow than you are today. But don't be so harsh on what you were either. It's a process. The best thing to do is to be able to step back and rationally look at it as a stepping stone in your development process. Eventually you get so that you can see what works without just drowning in shame over what doesn't.

Hey, emo stuff is liked because it resonates. So much of this a matter of taste. Sometimes when you are feeling down, you just fucking need some poetry to cry over.

My sister in law is a published poet, known and admired in poetry circles around the world. She spends her summers every year in a different country being paid to teach poetry. So you'd think by definition she'd be someone universally admired. But you know what? I love that woman to death, but her poetry is incredibly boring to me. I'm talking reading business meeting minutes boring.

Diversity is good. It means that everyone has a chance of finding something they enjoy. If writing about wolves is what resonates with you, then be the best damn wolf-poet you can be.

I'm glad you're still writing! And that you were able to be honest with yourself and keep going! Not everyone is able to learn from their mistakes with such enthusiasm. Good for you.
