Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Money gone. Panic now. D:

(Anonymous) 2012-09-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I got home from work and checked my emails. In them was an alert from my bank that I was nearly out of money. Puzzled, I grabbed my transaction register (which I'm diligent about keeping transactions uptodate, but lousy at actually balancing) and quickly did some maths. Even figuring in the pending charges, I should have over $500. My online banking info says I have about $10.

In the 18 months history available online, I couldn't find any transactions that weren't in my register or would in any way explain this discrepancy. I am absolutely freaking out and can't do anything about it until the bank opens tomorrow.

I've never had anything like this happen before. Any banking types around with advice? Or someone who's been in this position? Hugs? D:

I hope everything gets sorted out quickly! :( That sounds like a scary situation.

Me too. At least my payday is this Friday, but it's gonna suck hardcore if I can't find where it went.

Call the bank as soon as you can. Make an appointment to speak with a banker. Print out the bank statements as they are right now, and check your math. That way, when you go in, you'll have hard copies to show how they were originally, in case the bankers don't believe you.

Good luck.

Will do. Thanks.

What Loracarol said. If you have proof of checks written and deposits made, make sure to take those, too.

Unfortunately, I toss receipts as soon as I write them down in my register (unless it's something with a warranty, or I think I might have to return it). I do have all my paycheck stubs though. I keep those for a few years before shredding them.

if you make a deposit the bank will give you a little receipt. don't toss those right away.

My paychecks are direct deposited by my employer. The "stubs" are my receipts and I keep them for a few years. I don't really make other deposits.

Also, in addition to what everyone has said, make photocopies of your hard copies (have at least a copy of everything) in case the bank wants to keep a copy themselves for proof. Never let them take the originals from you.

This includes physical print outs of your banking history. Don't rely on being able to access your online history any time you need to. The system might be down or the internet connection might be broken but at least you have proof of how things were when the history was printed.

Did you use a debit card at a gas station or at the pump? Sometimes they will put a crazy ass charge on your card that takes a while to clear. They put the money back in eventually. IDK why they do this.

Over a week ago, and at the same place I always go to. They've never done any kind of hold or charge on me. Plus I would think that would show as a pending transaction or something on my bank info. This just sucks.

True, but it's usually a brief hold of $50-$75, not close to $500 ...

This happened twice to my sister before she switched banks. She would get overdrawn notices and discover that her supposedly full account had been leached clean. All it took was going to the bank office and explaining the situation, they even managed to track where the ATM was used to withdraw her money and it wasn't anywhere near where she lived or visited.

I went with her the first time it happened and asked the bank lady how often they have to deal with something like this. She said about once a week. 0_0

So anyway there is a very good chance that your bank is used to dealing with this and it can be cleared up quickly. *hugs*

If you have online banking and you really do keep track of your purchases, you should be able to do a straight-across comparison of each transaction that deducts from your account, and your own records. This is how I balance my checkbook every week or two.
