Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

oh fucking please.

"Oh fucking please" indeed. The best that one can do sometimes is hide one's face or bite down on something -- and yes, that should be done when necessary. Involuntary responses to stimuli happen sometimes. A trained comedian or actor can control laughter fairly well, but most people can't.

oh yea, that's why creative writing teachers regularly burst into laughter or scoff openly when they hear the 90% of total laughable crap that makes up the assignments in their classes. And why therapists have to bite their lips or hide their faces in their pillows when they hear people's ridiculous problems.

Oh, wait, no they don't, because they've figured out how vulnerable humans are when they're sharing something deeply personal face-to-face for the express purpose of critique, and so have managed to put themselves into a correspondingly respectful mindset NO MATTER HOW STUPID THE SHIT IS THAT THEY HEAR.

It is a difficult technique, known in some circles "being a fucking adult."

Agreed to an extent. Sometimes it takes practice but it absolutely should be learned.

Actually I guess I agree completely, just not with all your vitriol.

(To be fair, I'm sure part of the reason teachers don't laugh is they've heard so much of it from other students that it isn't that funny to them anymore. Which is just as well if it helps them to be decent about it. Also, I think it would be 100x worse if it were coming from a teacher.)

Teachers, therapists... i.e., professionals.

OP's a student. Yeah, they shouldn't have giggled. But if you don't have training and experience, then sometimes... giggles happen.

And OP sounds so VERY mortified and remorseful at her lack of control that could have easily (and probably did) cause humiliation. This secret is simply dripping with rueful regret.

If you get the giggles at a writing workshop because someone's work is so terrible, you are not meant to be at a writing workshop. I said it downthread and meant it sincerely. Withdraw and find another environment. It's not the place for you and you're an asshole if you stay.

Oh, please, my creative writing teacher used the class Read outlouds (or, ROLs) assignments as his own personal riff club. I remember we had to do an assignment involving "intimacy." We got to listen to him compare sex with his wife while we ROLed our intimate scenes.

Class didn't end until he sent one of us home in tears.

I fail to see how that's equivalent to laughing at an individual person's work because you think it's so terrible you can't contain yourself.

Unless I'm missing something and that's in fact what happened, in which case congratulations on your shitty bully of a writing teacher, I guess.

This.

My god, you are an asshole. Your point is valid, but...you, yourself, behave like a complete asshole. You might not laugh at inappropriate moments, but you have no compunction against responding to another person with condescension and arrogance if they disagree with you, even if that person is disagreeing in a respectful manner.

It's two sides of the same coin. OP is a jerk, but so are you.
