Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

I don't write poetry, but I did take a poetry workshop once. This guy is pretty lucky he only had to deal with rude giggling, my classmates were the kind who enjoyed the brutal part of brutal honesty. But some of them ended up published, so I guess that can work.

But how can that be? They were clearly awful human beings for not coddling their fellow classmates and keeping their opinions to themselves. They should not have achieved anything in life.

It's possible to be realistic, honest, and kind all at the same time. It's not easy, but it is possible.

I don't understand. I've had my poems ripped apart before. It may have hurt but it was for the betterment of my writing.

Laughing doesn't help at all. It's just mean.

Or were they hurling demeaning insults at you while critiquing or something?

That's how I interpreted "enjoyed the 'brutal' part", or at least demeaning insults at the poem.

That sucks. ): That wouldn't fly in the classrooms I've been in. It's fine to be honest about how bad something is and how it needs improvement but you got to respect the people you're talking to and not demean them. That's just not nice.

No one said anything to me - I was there to polish some translations, not do original work. The one original piece I did bring in was called "needlessly obscure," which it totally was.

Writing about feelings just wasn't done, and the one time someone tried to bring in a love poem, the first comment was "is this flarf?" That's not helpful at all.

That is just depressing. The whole point of critique is to help the writer improve.

I'm sorry you had to sit through that class.
