Not talking about all of life everywhere but in a specific setting. And no, I have never lost control of my emotions and laughed openly or giggled uncontrollably at someone sharing their work in a creative writing workshop situation.

Yeah. If you're in a creative writing class of any kind, one of the first things you learn in that environment is how to say something nice about writing that is utterly horrible.

I can see how OP could be saying "Usually I don't have this problem, but this poem was just so bad I completely lost it despite knowing full well You Just Don't DO That" but I think it's also quite possible to read it as that she hasn't quite understood why that's a no-no.
