Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Anon asking for advise Warning possible eating disorder

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got back to university this week and there is this girl in my year who seems to have lost a lot of weight. I mean she used to be pretty thin to start of with but now she looks scary thin. Also it is pretty warm outside but she was wearing sweater and a scarf. And finally the few conversations I can remember having with her all seemed to centre around her wanting to lose weight.

Am I overreacting or is there really something wrong with her?

And can I do something about this? I really don't know her that well.

Could be an eating disorder, could be other health issues. I don't know, ask her maybe? Or maybe not directly but a general "hey, are you doing okay?"

Are you two friends? If so, just let her know you're there for her etc.

Sorry not very good advice I guess.

I think in your situation, alarm bells would be going off for me as well. However, since you don't know her that well this kind of thing can be hard to judge.

Is there someone who handles welfare of students that you could anonymously talk to? Since you don't sound comfortable bringing it up to her personally (completely justified, imo), giving the information to someone who can help her is the next best step.

Either way, don't do nothing. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I agree. Say something to her RA or to the counselor on campus.

I think just say to her "are you okay?" and see what goes on from there.

Maybe try to strike up a conversation with her. Ask her how she's doing, ask her if she's okay. Try to listen to her and be understanding.
Keep the focus off of losing weight, dieting or food.
Whatever you do, don't comment on her appearance.
