I've got a horror story too --- I was working a contract in another city and didn't want to give up my house, so. I lucked out with the last room left in the city (it's a Uni. town, and my contract started the same month the Uni started up again) in a new(er) house in a new(er) subdivision. The place was immaculate when I went to view it, the landlord was living onsite at the time. They were two boarders in the house, and we were working professionals. The landlord's kid and their SO were Uni. students. Medical students. Remember that.

Three days after the landlord moved out, a month or so after we'd all moved in, the place looked like Hoarding: Buried Alive. Before the intervention. Including the filth. There were clean patches where each one of us adults kept up our own little corner(s) of the kitchen that we used...when we could use it, that is. When it wasn't stacked ceiling-height with dirty pots and pans and dishes and not a single dish, plate, or piece of cutlery left in the house that had not somehow been soiled (and not even put in the dishwasher)...with the "loving couple" curled up asleep on the couch in the middle of the maelstrom, offering a cursory, "You can have our leftovers" when one or the other of us came downstairs to try and cook our OWN dinner(s).

Which I wouldn't, just on principle: If I have to clean up SOMEONE ELSE'S MESS to cook my own meal, I'd rather not eat. I ended up eating takeaway all one summer, because the med students (who, I repeat, were filthy pigs and I would run in the other direction, if I were ever unfortunate enough to fall under either of their "care") had a party, and left empty beer bottles lining the countertops and every available surface for TWO WEEKS.

Given this was the middle of a scorching summer, yes we got maggots. And then we got flies. But the two of them STILL cooked and ate in that kitchen with the state that it was in, swarms of flies wafting up off the cupboard doors every time you went to open one. *gag* I gave up cooking completely, until the landlord moved back in and disinfected everything again. But alas, it was not to last. Three days after he was gone again a month later, it was back just exactly as bad as it was before --- I could go on and on with explicit details, but the thing I couldn't get over was the fact that these were MED STUDENTS --- who acted like they had never even HEARD of this little thing called infection control......

My ex was like that. He didn't take garbage out for over a month because he was too lazy to do so and it had organic trash in it. =/
