I can't donate because I take blood thinners and have been on some other serious medications for years and years. I think they also consider me underweight to donate. :( I'm afraid of giving blood even in small amounts for tests, but yeah being able to donate is really important and there's never ever enough people who do.

If you go to science fiction conventions, there is often a drive sponsored by The Heinlein Society. Anyone at Dragon*Con last week, were they there? They are at almost every Worldcon, and I always see them at my local annual convention (LA's famous Loscon). To find other drives near you (US), enter your zip code here. You can donate blood roughly every 2 months, but if you do it at least 3 times a year you can make a really important contribution and save up to 9 lives.
