Notes:

Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Secrets Left to Post: ?? pages, ??? secrets from Secret Submission Post #296.

You might've just gotten lucky. I remember being on an AOL-message-board-based RP when I was about 14--the median age was 14-15, most of us were girls, and we had a 40 year old guy weasel his way in. We tentatively RPed with him, but none of us were comfortable with him or how overtly friendly he was with us, even though to my knowledge he didn't really try to initiate anything romantic/sexual with anyone. I don't know. Maybe we were being judgmental, but sadly, in most cases, it's just better to be safe than sorry.

~it's just better to be safe than sorry~

I frequently have to walk a long distance on hot days, and often someone will pull over to offer me a ride. I always politely decline, because that's the way the world is; you can't trust the 99.5% who are good people because, yes, it's better safe than sorry.

However, the stakes aren't remotely that high when the decision you're making is merely whether or not to RP with someone, so there's no need to be so quick to apply the instinctive distrust. If someone does turn out to be a creep, it's simple enough to stop communicating with them. (Providing you haven't given out any personal info, but that's standard advice online anyway.)

The condescending tildes were really unnecessary, for future reference.

I understand what you're saying, yes. And I wish it was as easy as that. You said it yourself; it's instinctive. As 14-year-old girls, we saw a man more than twice our age trying to be our best friend, and we wondered "why?"

+1

There was this twenty seven year old who became "friends" with me through a chatroom, back when I was fifteen. He seemed nice, foreign, I think, his english was bad at times. But then a month into it he started talking about he had broken up with his girlfriend/what he looked like/how I was such a nice girl. He then finally said he was looking for a relationship with a "nice girl" and said I could come visit him in California any time I wanted.

I called him out on it, how he was way too old to be trying to date someone my age. He acted *hurt* and said I wasn't a "nice girl" but a "mean one" and blocked me. It still creeps me out to this day.

Sorry, it's a formatting tic - that's how I indicate that I'm quoting something from another post. Absolutely no condescension intended.

And I'm sure it is a bit naive on my part, but I like the fact that fandom is a place where we can - if and only if we so desire, because we all 100% have the right to ignore/block someone who makes us uncomfortable - give people the benefit of the doubt, again just because the stakes are lower.

The AOL Japan Make Friends chatroom was full of stuff like that. *Very* skeevy.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-07 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I stayed so far away from the chatrooms. After a while a few of us joked that there were literally no legitimate people left in them, just people pretending to be 13/f/cali.

The main thing I recall is that they were full of pedophiles :/
