Re: Crazy-ass people stories.
This was still within my first few weeks. I was still learning how to navigate through a city that was basically the paved oxcart roads on side streets, and basically had no idea where anything was.
Dan, another great foreign teacher at the school, was super sweet and outgoing and inclusive. He had already been teaching at the school for most of a year by then, so he was more comfortable with everything, and was eager to help out the new people. After classes one day, he asked if Chris and I wanted to go out and get something to eat together. For whatever reason, we had stopped by the school's massive front doors to convene, and Hyunjae happened upon us as we tried to figure out what we wanted to eat.
"Oh!" she exclaimed once she heard what we were doing. "Can I come, too?"
An awkward silence fell on the group. Hyunjae was older than us, by how much we weren't sure, but she sure as hell wasn't the twenty-somethings we all were. That, and we weren't sure about how she would act.
Dan, always diplomatic, said, "Sure, why not."
So off we went down the extremely steep path to get to the village proper. (Fun note: most Korean schools are set around mountains, in the foothills. I was told this is because the land is cheap and otherwise worthless, so it's easy to put schools there.)
While we wind our way through the narrow side streets, we try to think of what we want. We settle on a Thai place that Dan knows.
"Oh oh!" Hyunjae nearly jumps with pleasure. "I know of a good place. Can I see your phone, I can get directions." Dan hands her his phone. After five minutes, she still can't get the place to show up. This is March in Korea. It is fucking freezing, and we're standing in evening pedestrian traffic in one of the busiest neighborhoods of our area. It sucks.
Finally, we manage to get her to give it up, and we go to the place Dan knows. It's big and cool, and the staff speaks English. Awesome! (We had a fairly well known university with a big foreign language program nearby, and most of the staff in any restaurant were students.)
We lapse into casual conversation, relaxing. Hyunjae huddles as best she can in her aisle place in the booth, and slurps her soup. We get our orders and share food, and I pass off what I can't eat, and Hyunjae never once tries to get into the conversation. Jut watches us eat and talk, and if she spaces out, she comes back to to ask, "Huh what?" about a part of something that wan't addressed to her.
It was an awkward, awkward dinner.
We finally leave to go home, the sun having fallen already, and part ways. Hyunjae forces a cheerful "Goodbye!" and scurries off. I felt a bit sorry for her, trying to fit in somewhere.
