Important: I'm really sorry about this, but I accidentally misclicked and deleted the submission post from last week instead of saving it. Managed to save the first page (25) of secrets, but the rest (about 100 or so) are gone.

If you submitted something last week (Aug 26-Sept 1), please resubmit it here.

The submissions post for next week is below as usual.

Finals continued

Oh yes, by the way. She was still teaching literature. We were supposed to have four classes total per week with these kids. What it ended up being was two classes of public speaking, and two classes of liteature. And both were going to show up on the midterms.

The kids were incredibly frazzled. They had to wade through long, complicated texts not in their native tongue, and answer shittily-phrased existential questions about them. And on top of that, they had a presentation to do for the public speaking, and an essay due for the literature. They essentially had two courses worth of work load for just one class. It was ridiculous.

This essay bit was very very important, and because of Hyunjae's fragile mental state at the time of the finals, due to administration having her on probation, and her having screaming fights with Chris, she was likely to snap at anything. She chose the essay to freak out about. And why?

Because the kids were “plagiarizing”. At first she didn't phrase it like that. She told them they were breaking rules, being unethical, stealing, basically tearing them down and acting like a complete asshole to a bunch of 18 year olds.

And why? Because they didn't know how to cite their information properly, a skill that basically only is used in college. Hyunjae never bothered to properly teach them how to cite or disclaim paraphrasing before she saddled them with an analysis of the text.

Now, while I waited in one of the “wing rooms”, a small, rectagular room set to the sides of classrooms in the U shaped halls, the kids were in the classroom getting reamed out for shit they never knew about. I had no idea this was going on. All she told me was that she needed to have a discussion about some of her assignments with the students. I was waiting outside for her to finish-- another tactic of hers, isolating me away from her classes so I couldn;t interfere.

Finally, several students boiled out, faces angry and eyes tearful. I had no idea whatsoever what the fuck was going on, but I was concerned. One of the girls, a smart Korean-American who liked to go by the name Harriet, approached me. “Can I talk to you?” she asked. She sounded tense, angry.

“Sure, of course!” They needed to field something by me, and at this point, I knew they needed someone to cut through the bullshit for them.

It started with Harriet and her best friend talking to me in the side room. Hyunjae was yelling at them for “plagiarizing”. Harriet refused, demanding her to tell her where it is. Hyunjae tells the rest of the class not to listen to Harriet, she's a bad student. Harriet grits her teeth and tells her again to show her where she plagiarized. Hyunjae speaks over her and continues her accusations. She singles out several students and tells them they will be getting failing grades, and will be reported to the principle. It goes on for some time.

As she talks, gradually the little room fills with most of the class, surrounding Harriet as she explains to me how Hyunjae pretty much just snapped. Like, not lost her temper, but was having a minor psychotic break.

Several kids come forward with their essay to show me the parts where she scribbled were plagiarized. As I read it, I could see they had rephrased some sentences from the reading or from Hyunjae's analysis. Being only high schoolers, and Koreans, they had never been introduced to the particulars of citing papers.

I was disgusted. I could not believe a grown woman like that was persecuting a class full of kids about shit she evidently had no idea about.

More details come out. They witnessed screaming fights between Hyunjae and Chris, where Hyunjae would accuse him of trying to steal the class and not knowing anything about the subject matter. Chris asking her if she would rather take this outside, not in front of the students. As if she were being reasonable, as though she were glad to have witnesses to how badly she was being treated, she would scream back, “I don't care, I want them to hear!” How Chris walked out instead of engaging her further. How he would later start ignoring her in class, talking over her.

How she would tell them how when she left the school, she was going to write a book about the hypocrisy in the school and the darkness in people. How the fucking woman was 38, and acting like a spoiled kid.

I feel angry for them. I feel they've dealt with way too much, and not enough people were helping them. I tell them, “Whatever you need me to do, just let me know. If you need me to talk to the principle, vice principle. Tell stories about class, anything. I'm on your side.”

This is how the worst of it starts.
